Lineage Power, Verizon Partner On Energy Efficiency Effort
Plano-based Lineage Power, a developer of power conversion modules, and telecom provider Verizon Communications said Thursday that the firms are partnering in a deal to test new technology which significantly decreases the amount of electricity used in information and communications technology equipment. According to the firms, Verizon will be testing the technology in five of its central office facilities. The firms said they are tapping technology from Lineage Power--including specially designed rectifiers and software--which will increase the efficiency of the AC/DC conversion process to up to 97 percent. In an interview, Trent Waterhouse, the firm's VP of Marketing, said that current telecom equipment running on DC power typically runs at only 92 percent efficiency, with computer equipment based on AC power at only 88 percent. Communications and computing facilities account for approximately 3 percent of all U.S. electricity use, the firms said.
