Gowalla Competitor Foursquare Hit By Downtime

Foursquare, the primary competitor to Austin's location-based social networking service Gowalla, suffered a highly visible black eye this week, when Foursquare went down for 11 hours on Tuesday. Affording to Foursquare, its site when down when the firm decided to make some database changes to deal with performance issues on the site, but instead triggered a complete shutdown of its site. Both Gowalla and Foursquare offer up social, location-based checkin services, which allow users to tell others when they've visited stores and businesses.
