OpenStack Foundation Launches, Focused On Open Cloud

A new organization, the OpenStack Foundation, spawned from the cloud software originally developed by Rackspace, said today that it has launched with $10M in funding and a host of corporate sponsors. The group said it will promote the development, distribution and adoption of the OpenStack cloud software. OpenStack is a set of open source software which can be used to run public and private clouds. Rackspace, which is based in San Antonio, said it has transitioned management activities and the OpenStack trademark to the new foundation. The Platinum members of the foundation are AT&T, Canonical, HP, IBM, Nebula, Rackspace, Red Hat and SUSE; the foundation also has thirteen Gold Members, which include CCAT, Cisco, Cloudscaling, Dell, DreamHost, Mirantis, Morphlabs, NetApp, Piston Cloud Computing, Yahoo!, Intel, NEC and VMware.
