Rackspace Gets Patent Victory
San Antonio-based Rackspace Hosting, along with Linux OS provider Red Hat, said Thursday morning that they have won a federal court decision, an early motion to dismiss and invalidates patent claim alleged to cover Linux technology. The firm said the victory came over Uniloc USA, which had sued Rackspace in June 2012 over violation of a patent Uniloc said had been infringed upon by the company. Rackspace and Red Hat characterized the win as a "decisive victory" and said it hoped the win would also send a message that patent assertion entities can't expect quick settlements on weak claims. The technology industry has been under seige in recent years from so-called "patent trolls" who buy up the rights to technology patents, and then aggressively demand licensing feeds from product companies.
