Uber, Lyft Shut Down In Austin After Losing Prop 1 Vote
Uber, Lyft, and other ridesharing services in Austin have shut down services in the city, after voters rejected a bill that would have staved off fingerprinting and criminal background checks for new drivers in Austin. Both companies had been campaigning heavily to allow the companies--and not the city--to continue to screen their own drivers, rather than subject themselves to more intense regulation from Austin. Both Uber and Lyft had heavily supported Proposition 1, bombarding the city with commercials and mailers.
