AlterPoint Upgrades Network Config Software

Austin, Texas-based AlterPoint, a developer of network management software, said today that it has released an upgraded version of its open source ZipTie network configuration software. The free software, which the firm makes available under an open source license to enterprises, is geared toward network configuration inventory and automatic network configuration management. AlterPoint said the release adds graphical tools for extending ZipTie software support for any network hardware device. The open source tool allows vendors to add support for their network hardware with minimal development effort. AlterPoint said it will contribute more than 40 existing adapters into the ZipTie project, which is covered by the Mozilla Public License. Network management software developers like AlterPoint are constantly having to write new software to adapt to new network hardware and vendors; the firm's move to make its tool an open source project is an attempt to address the issues of constantly developing individual equipment code. AlterPoint is venture backed by Austin Ventures, JK&B Capital, and Palomar Ventures.
