SoftLayer Launches Cloud Storage Service
Dallas-based SoftLayer, the provider of Internet hosting and data center services, said this morning that it is getting into the object-based, cloud storage services business. The firm said its new SoftLayer Object Storage service allow sits users to store, search, and retrieve data from the Internet. Object storage is a technique used to store unstructured data--such as images, videos, email, binary data, and more--to make it easier to retrieve via software. According to SoftLayer, the new service includes optional CDN connectivity or access via its global private network. Pricing on the new object storage offering was not disclosed, however the firm said it will offer per-gigabyte pricing to users. SoftLayer is targeting use for storing such information as virtual machine images, graphic files, and email with the service.
