Dell Backs ARM Server Development With Servers
Round Rock-based Dell said it is backing efforts by the industry to develop ARM-based servers, saying that it will help to build the ARM-based server ecosystem. Among other actions, Dell said it will deliver its "Copper" ARM server to select customers and partners and provide remote-accessible clusters made up of those same Copper ARM servers via apartnership with the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). Dell's launch of an ARM-based server follows a similar launch by HP earlier this week, tapping local semiconductor developer Calxeda to launch its own line of low power, ARM-based servers. Dell is looking to gain a share of the developing ARM based server market, which uses low cost, low power ARM processors instead of traditional chips from providers such as Intel and AMD for high powered servers. Those ARM-based servers are expected to cut costs and power requirements for running high powered server software.
