Calxeda Deploys Chips in Penguin Computing Servers
Austin-based Calxeda, fresh off a $55M funding round, said today that its chips are being shipped in a new line of servers from Penguin Computing. Calxeda said that it has now shipped "thousands" of its chips to OEM customers and end users, as it begins rolling out its products into the market. Calxeda's long awaited chips take advantage of the low power consumption of ARM processors, to reduce the energy usage in data centers. Those chips--typically used in mobile platforms--have not been used previously in data center operations. Calxeda said its EnergyCore ECX-1000 systems-on-a-chip (SoC) is being aimed initially at optimized racks for implementing public and private clouds, as well as for "warehouse-scale" datacenters. Calxeda is backed by ARM Holdings, Advanced Technology Investment Company, Austin Ventures, Battery Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, Highland Capital Partners, and Vulcan Capital.
