Molecular Imprints Sells Semiconductor Business To Canon

Austin-based Molecular Imprints, a developer of equipment used in the semiconductor industry, said it is selling its semiconductor business to Canon, and will spin out a new, independent company focused on nanotechnology. Financial terms of the acquisition and sale were not announced. Molecular Imprints is a spinout of the University of Texas at Austin, and had been developing imprinted lithography equipment used for semiconductors development in the display, hard disk drive, and biotechnology areas. Molecular Imprints' technology was developed in the labs of Professors SV Sreenivasan and Grant Willson. Molecular Imprints was venture backed by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Tokyo Electron Venture Capital, Wafra Investment Advisory Group, KT Venture Group, Alloy Ventures and Motorola Ventures.
