ACE Data Aims New Service At Failed Self Encrypting Drives

Failing, self-encrypted hard drives are proving to be a new market for Dallas-based ACE Data Recovery, the company said this morning. The new drives--which are sold by Western Digital--provide encryption on its My Book and Passport hard drives and also through their own internal, self-encryption method--which is great for data security, but apparently not so great when hard drives fail. According to ACE Data Recovery, it has developed its own method using custom hardware and software to help repair corrupted drives, which is normally not possible due to limited access to those drives' system areas. Ace said it makes those hard drives stable enough to extract data for their clients--although the company requires the clients to come up with their own AES passwords to extract their data, as the company does not break or recover lost passwords. Pricing on the new service was not announced.
