Cyberonics Invests in Sleep Apnea Device Firm

Houston-based Cyberonics, the publicly held developer of medical devices for treating epilepsy and other diseases, said today that it has invested $12M in a developer of sleep apnea treatment devices. According to Cyberonics, it made the investment in ImThera, a San Diego, California developer of an implantable neurostimulation device used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. Cyberonics led the funding, which was a Series C, with ImThera's other investors also investing another $4M in the round. Cyberonics said the investment will give it access to promising new therapeutic neurostimulation technology outside of its core business.
