Rackspace Takes On Private Clouds with OpenStack
San Antonio-based Rackspace Hosting said today that it has released a version of its OpenStack cloud software, aimed at private clouds. Private clouds--the implementation of cloud server techniques within a privately hosted, enterprise environment--allow companies to allocate computing resources much as they might with Rackspace or Amazon's cloud services, but within a secure, private environment. Rackspace said its new software, code named "Alamo", uses the same platform as its OpenStack, public cloud software. Rackspace said it will also provide services to help companies install their own private clouds.
