Dell Backs Effort To Turn Girl Scouts Into Video Game Developers

Round Rock-based Dell has backed an effort by the Girl Scouts of the USA, to help spur interest in video game development by girls. According to Dell, it is providing a two-year investment of $788,500 to support the Girl Scouts "Be the Video Game Developer Program", which teaches the principles behind video game development, video game concepts like rules, goals, core mechanics, plus testing and re-testing. The new effort is aimed at helping undeserved girls gain insight into the world of video game programming, so that they might gain the skills and confidence to join the field in the future. The Girl Scouts said that its game program has so far reached around 2,700 girls in its first two years. The video game development field is notoriously male-centric, however, a recent report says that around 22 percent of developers in the industry are now female.
