Trend Micro Helps In Criminal Conviction Over Malware Testing Service

Dallas-based cybersecurity software developer Trend Micro says its experts assisted in an investigation, which resulted in a conviction of two cybercriminals. According to Trend Micro, it worked in close cooperation with the FBI to identify, arrest and bring to trial the individuals linked to the Counter Antivirus (CAV) service Scan4You. Trend Micro said guity please and convictions related to Scan4You were the result of an "exclusive investigative cooperation" between Trend Micro researchers and the FBI. Scan4You was a "counter antivirus service" which was being used by hackers to determine if a computer virus or malicious software would be detected by antivirus software. The FBI and Department of Justice said on Wednesday that the malware developed through the service inflicted "hundreds of millions of dollars" in losses on American companies and consumers. The DOJ said, in just one case, malware developed using Scan4You helped hackers steal approximately 40 million credit and debit card numbers, as well as approximately 70 million addresses, phone numbers and other pieces of personal identifying information, from retail store locations throughout the United States, causing one retailer approximately $292 million in expenses resulting from the intrusion.
