AT&T To Expand 5G Efforts To Houston, San Antonio
Dallas-based wireless carrier AT&T says it plans to add mobile, 5G service in five new cities today--including Houston and San Antonio--even as it has demonstrated the use of the brand new, millimeter wave technology at a technology demo in Waco this weekend. According to AT&T, it demonstrated the world's first wireless 5G data transfer over millimeter wave using standards-based, production equipment with a mobile form factor device with its partners in Waco this weekend. The new cities announced today include Houston, Jacksonville, Louisville, New Orleans, and San Antonio, and are on top of an earlier announcement of supporting the brand new technology in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose. Mobile carriers like AT&T are moving towards 5G, millimeter wave technology in search of higher bandwidth and throughput on their networks, especially with ever growing mobile data consumption. The biggest issue with the new technology is those millimeter wave networks--due to their physical properties--do not travel well through walls or other obstacles.
