Smooth-Stone Becomes Calxeda, Hires Execs
Austin-based Smooth-Stone, a firm which is looking to apply ultra low power mobile processors to the data center and server market, is changing its name to Calxeda, the firm is announcing tomorrow. According to the company, the new name is a derivative of the Latin for "Smooth-Stone."
In addition to the new name, the company said it has hired three new executives, including Karl Freud as its Vice President of Marketing, Bob Baughman as Vice President of Business Development and Sales, and Steve Beatty as Vice President of Manufacturing. Freud has previously been at IBM and HP; Baughman at Polycom and Marvell; and Beatty at Freescale and SigmaTel. Calxeda is venture backed by ARM, Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), Battery Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, Highland Capital Partners and Texas Instruments Inc. The firm just raised a big $48M round of funding in August.
