Freescale Targets Internet Of Things With Ultra-Thin Microcontroller

Austin-based Freescale Semiconductor is taking aim at the Internet of Things (IoT) with its newest microcontroller, the Freescale Kinetis K22. According to Freescale, its device is only 0.34 millimeters in height, or the thinness of a blade of grass, allowing the chip to be embedded into credit cards, used in wearables, and consumer electronics where its small form factor and security are essential. The company said it the chip is designed for secure payment and point-of-sale, IoT, and other markets. The company said the new device joins another in its family, the Kinetis KL03 MCU, which fits into the dimple of a golf ball. Microcontrollers (or MCUs, as they are known in the industry) are used for developing complex systems by electronics designers.
